Barcelona, Spain (PortSEurope) September 18, 2107 – Barcelona port was the harbour with the largest growth in container traffic in Europe in the first eight months of 2017, after its throughput in the segment rose 30.2% to 1,945,647 TEUs.
Although the increase in the transport of containers is rising in all of its modalities, the largest rise is in the transhipment segments, up 128.3%. The international traffic also went up, both in terms of imports and exports, up 6.7% and 5.4%, respectively.
The main reason behind the positive performance is the reinforcement of the sea offer with five new lines, all of them operated by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), which serve to reinforce the links to strategic markets such as India, USA, Canada and Brazil.
As for passenger traffic, Barcelona port handled 2.7 million travellers in the review period, up 2.2%. The ferry traffic rose by 11%.
