Piraeus, Greece (PortSEurope) February 23, 2018 – Global bunker supplier Aegean Marine Petroleum Network Inc. has entered into an agreement to acquire H.E.C. Europe Limited, the parent company of Hellenic Environmental Center S.A. and a group of companies that together provide global port reception facilities services.
The use of oil as a main source of energy in shipping produces waste which needs special management to avoid polluting the environment. Pollution of the sea by oil residues can be minimised by rational, legal and environmentally-acceptable management.
The management of oil waste constitutes the main activity of HEC.
The company undertakes the selective transport and treatment of oil residues from ships and land-based units (industrial, shipbuilding, etc), while it also manages all liquid residues generated by ships during operation.
Aegean Marine Petroleum Network is an international marine fuel logistics company that markets and physically supplies refined marine fuel and lubricants to ships in port and at sea.
The move to acquire HEC comes as environmental regulations in shipping are increasing.
Due to increased regulations, such as MARPOL 73/78, the global environmental market had grown significantly, Aegean said.
About 154 states have signed MARPOL, requiring over 30,000 ports worldwide to provide reception facilities similar to HEC, it said, adding that the business offered significant growth opportunities as it continued to negotiate partnerships with other port authorities and port owners.
