Cadena de Suministro comments on port-railway developments in Spain

Madrid, Spain (Ports Europe) March 7, 2018 - In the second month of the year, Spanish ports and large logistics platforms continue to bet on the development of rail connections to increase their traffic, maintaining their commitment to this type of transport for which there are increasingly more projects at an European level. In February 2018, rail transport has continued to make progress. In Spain, Renfe Mercancías traffic has registered growth of 7% in 2017 and recently, the Ministry of Development has been asked to advance planning of railway infrastructures to comply with European regulations. However, according to a report from Competencia, neither companies nor users still see the railroad as a competitive alternative to other modes of transport. In terms of the main ongoing projects, the European Union is going to promote an intermodal project between Catalonia and the French region of Occitania, while the port of Tarragona has commissioned a study on the demand for rail transport in the facilities of Puerta Centro, in Guadalajara, where it plans to build a terminal. This has not been the only initiative in the port and railway sector, since the Ministry of Development has approved the route of the railway connection of Punta Langosteira and the port of Huelva is promoting its railway infrastructures among operators in Madrid. For its part, Noatum Ports has just connected its railway terminal in Zaragoza with the port of Valencia through a regular service. Between these two zones, Adif has also initiated procedures to adapt the Sagunto-Teruel-Zaragoza line to the 750-metre trains. This connection has quintupled its merchandise traffic after the last improvements were made, but it is still far from reaching its maximum capacity. Meanwhile, the port of Algeciras continues to demand more investment in the Algeciras-Bobadilla-Madrid line, which should be completed in 2021 according to the Government. In the Pasajes, the movement of goods through the intermodal station de Lezo is proposed, which could manage a traffic of four million tons per year. As for the port of Bilbao, it has tendered the urbanization project for its merchandise in Arasur. The Junta de Extremadura has authorized the signing of an agreement with Adif for the construction of the railway terminal of the Badajoz Platform, for which it will contribute 12.1 million euros. The Ministry of Development has similarily agreed to authorize the road and rail connections for the logistics and industrial center of La Pasiega, in Cantabria, although it will not promote the project. At a European level, the traffic of trucks in the Eurotunnel has increased by 10% in the first month of 2018.
