Thessaloniki, Greece (PortSEurope) September 12, 2017 – The Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF/TAIPED) has been attending the Thessaloniki International Fair, and there have been reports that Copelouzos Group is interested in a role in developing Alexandropolis port.
Copelouzos Group is a fully integrated business development organization, servicing key industrial and technological sectors in Greece and abroad.
Alexandropolis port is one of Greece’s regional ports to be privatised by TAIPED in the near future. It has a number of attractions to potential investors.
The port is close to the Egnatia Odos or Egnatia Motorway which extends from the western port of Igoumenitsa to the eastern Greek–Turkish border and to the railway service to Thessaloniki.
It is also close to the route of the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP). TAP is a gas pipeline connecting with the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) at the Greek-Turkish border, crossing Northern Greece, Albania and the Adriatic Sea before coming ashore in southern Italy to connect to the Italian natural gas network.
It is also located near to the the Gas Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB Pipeline), which will provide a direct link between the national natural gas systems of Greece and Bulgaria.
At the same time, it is at the heart of the plans for the import of liquefied natural gas in the Balkans, through the promotion of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) gas-fired power plant from American and Greek business interests.
Alexandropolis is also the location for an offshore LNG facility.
The Alexandroupolis Independent Natural Gas System (INGS) project is a modern, technology project which comprises an offshore floating unit for the reception, storage and re-gasification of LNG and a system of a subsea and an onshore gas transmission pipeline through which the natural gas is shipped into the Greek National Natural Gas System (NNGS) and onwards to the final consumers. Commercial operations are set to start in 2020.
The news that the Copelouzos Group is interested in the port was reported as coming from Dimitris Copelouzos, the managing director of the company, who si also attending the fair.
