Nantes-St.Nazaire (France) January 18, 2018 – FlexiLoire, a new fluvial connection for the transport of heavy goods, containers and various freight between Nantes and Montoir-de-Bretagne was launched Tuesday, January 16, 2018. FlexiLoire, its name, is an initiative carried by the Grand Port Maritime of Nantes Saint-Nazaire, Nantes Métropole and CARENE.
The Loire was previously a busy waterway for transport and this business is now expected to return.
Compagnie Ligérienne de Transport (CLT), a private enterprise and a subsidiary of Compagnie Fluviale de Transport, was selected to operate the new service, and is already known on the river to supply coal power station EDF Cordemais, ensure the bunkering boats of the Loire and the transport of sections of Airbus. CLT will operate the service for five years.
CLT will provide 240 annual rotations on the estuary, five per week initially. If the main line will connect the outer ports of Nantes and Saint-Nazaire, other sites may be served in cabotage mode, depending on demand, including the center of Nantes. Nearly €2 million ($2.45 million) will be invested in the development of platforms and platforms that can accommodate the barge.
Currently, Airbus is the only manufacturer using the Loire, but, to be profitable, the company will have to look for other customers and loads – possibly transporting building materials and waste removal.
As a result, road transport will reduce, some 3,000 lorries could no longer be required.
