Gioia Tauro, Italy (PortSEurope) January 12, 2018 – Gioia Tauro port has lost its leadership on the Italian market for container traffic, as its throughput in the segment declined by 11% in 2017.
In this way, the port lost the traffic that it has been gradually gaining in many years. Moreover, there is a risk of new layoffs if the negative trend continues.
The reasons for the decline can be found in the disputes of Contship Italia and the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the two operators of the Med Center Container Terminal.
MSC has accused Contship Italia of delaying with investments in the modernisation of the infrastructure of the terminal. Contship Italia did not respond to the accusations.
From now on, there are two possible scenarios – MSC could withdraw from Gioia Tauro or acquire the stake of Contship Italia.
