Vilagarcía, Spain (PortSEurope) January 12, 2018 – At the end of November, the managers of Vilagarcía port already had more than enough reasons to be satisfied. With the accounts of 2017 already in place, the president of the port authority (Autoridad Portuaria de Vilagarcía), Sagrario Franco, announced that, in the last twelve months, the harbour has managed to beat its historical record of traffic, exceeding for the first time the figure of 1.2 million tonnes cargo.
Franco, who did not hide the satisfaction caused by the figures, thanked all the companies and workers linked to the port for results that he described as magnificent. The president emphasised that the 2017 figures are “a reflection of the growing dynamism of the port hinterland, a hinterland that we consider expanding, because thanks to the development of our infrastructure and services, and the work of the entire port community, we are competitive”.
According to the data for last year, solid bulk account for 35% of port traffic and the remaining 16.1% is contributed by liquid bulk. Although both categories do not enjoy the dominance they had in the port ten years ago, the volume handled in both cases has improved compared to 2016.
