EUROKAI Reports Container Traffic Down Over 10% In Q1 2020

EUROKAI reports container traffic down over 10% in Q1 2020

Hamburg, Germany (PortSEurope) May 20, 2020 – In January-March 2020, EUROKAI Group container terminals recorded 2.67 million TEU handled, down 10.2% on the same period of 2019 (2.98 million TEU). RUROKAI reported that the quarter was affected by a large number of blank sailings and the first effects of the Covid-19 coronavirus crisis. A blank sailing is a sailing that has been canceled by the carrier, which may mean
one port is being skipped, or the entire string canceled. Handling volumes at the Contship Italia Group in the first quarter 2020 were down 9.2% at 421,136 TEUs (463,531 TEUs). Due to the lower handling volumes in Italy, the overall result for the Contship Italia Group also declined in the first quarter of 2020. Handling volumes at the stake holdings abroad were likewise down overall in the first quarter 2020, at -10.9%. It should be emphasised that Eurogate Container Limassol, of Limassol (Cyprus), recorded growth of 2.7%.
