Tenerife, Spain (PortSEurope) September 26, 2020 – Puertos del Estado has launched a pilot project to supply electricity to ships by using an electric generator with an H2 fuel cell. The initiative will allow the crew of the SASEMAR vessel, based in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, to be docked without having to keep their auxiliary engines running. Puertos del Estado, which coordinates the OPS MASTERPLAN
project, established a collaboration with the EVERYWH2ERE project  to develop the first pilot of electricity supply to ships berthed through the on-site generation of renewable energy. This energy is generated from hydrogen using a 100 kW fuel cell that is being assembled in Italy. Puertos del Estado chose SC de Tenerife Port Authority, which applied for the materialization of this pilot. This initiative is in addition to the recently completed pilot projects for the electricity supply facilities at berth in Santa Cruz de La Palma, San Sebastián de la Gomera and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. To materialize this supply, Tenerife established a collaboration with SASEMAR, that will allow the company’s vessel to eliminate noise and vibrations on board for the crew, and benefit from the absence of contamination around the place where this search and rescue vessel remains docked. The use of an electric generator based on hydrogen to supply ships berthed could constitute the first pilot for Spanish ports that have already used this new fuel for various machinery or port equipment in Valencia. Tenerife participates with two other port authorities (Las Palmas and Baleares) in the OPS MASTERPLAN Project, which is co-financed by the European Union and hose objective is the promotion of electricity supply to ships in dock. It is executing several pilots in different ports by providing outlets connected to the general electrical network, and it promoted relevant measures for the promotion of this innovative technological solution. The pilot facilities are located in the ports of Tenerife, Santa Cruz de La Palma and San Sebastián de la Gomera and the relevant tests are being carried out with the Armas shipping company in San Sebastián de la Gomera and with Fred Olsen in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In Las Palmas, 16 outlets will make it possible to replace diesel generators to power ships and repair equipment on board, thereby eliminating noise and pollution in the city of Las Palmas. In Palma de Mallorca, two electrical outlets will allow the ferries to use the berth at night without causing inconvenience to the neighbouring population. The OPS MASTERPLAN Project adopted five relevant measures to initiate and make this new form of berthing supply attractive: the modification of the legal framework to allow the Port Authorities and also the electricity distribution companies to execute OPS projects, the 50% bonus of the port tax, the elimination of the electricity tax, the reduction of the power toll through supply contracts for days or even hours, and a subsidy of €10 for each ton of CO2 that is not emitted into the atmosphere when the ship is connected to the general electrical network at the berth. The berthing power supply is ‘green’ and ‘sustainable’ to the extent that the electrical energy supplied was generated by renewable sources such as solar or wind energy. The pilot project that is now beginning will allow the acquisition of the necessary know-how in hydrogen technology, which is postulated as a key element for ports of general interest both due to its possibilities of energy repository and fuel itself.
