Alcoa Generates 43% Of Ferrol Port’s Traffic

Ferrol, Spain (PortSEurope) January 10, 2019 – US industrial company Alcoa Corporation generated 43% of the total traffic of Ferrol port in 2018, or 5.85 million tonnes of the 13.68 million tonnes handled by the harbour in its best year ever.

Alcoa mainly handles bauxite at the port, a main raw material for the company and the second most important for the harbour after the coal.

At the Mariñano dock, a total of 4.24 million tonnes of bauxite were handled, 550,000 more than in 2017. At the same time, a total of 4.73 million tonnes of coal were serviced at the Ferrol docks.

The third most important type of traffic at the port authority was the alumina: 1.19 million tonnes in 2018, one million less than in 2017.

Alcoa Corporation is a leading global producer of bauxite, aluminium and aluminium products with corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It has Spanish operations in A Coruña and Aviles.

In October last year, Alcoa announced plans to close plants in both locations. Including indirect employment, this could effect 3,000 jobs. The Spanish government has called on the company to explore options to keep some production at the sites.
