Algeciras, Spain (PortSEurope) January 10, 2019 – Autoridad Portuaria de la Bahía de Algeciras (APBA – Port Authority of Algeciras) has received from the Andalusian Regional Ministry of the Environment certification in the Environmental Management and Auditing System (EMAS), which is the voluntary mechanism of the European Union for the companies that commit themselves to evaluate, manage and improve their environmental behavior.
After an exhaustive audit conducted by a certification body, Algeciras becomes one of the seven Spanish ports that has this accreditation, being the first port authority to achieve it in Andalusia. In addition, the port authority is a pioneer in the port sector for incorporating measures not only for their scope of work or offices, but also those required by customers or suppliers.
The recognition is added to the certification of the Environmental Management System of the port authority in accordance with the UNE-EN ISO 140001-2015 standard, and PERS certificate (Port Enviromental Review System) granted by the European Ports Organisation (ESPO) which “confirms the successful implementation of the standards and requirements established in EcoPorts”.
The port authority has explained that the EMAS certificate recognises the transparency of the port authority by making its environmental declaration publicly available on its website. In the document, the body expresses its commitment to port development that respects the environment.
