Algeciras, Spain (PortSEurope) May 23, 2018 – Algeciras port has closed the first four months of the year with a total traffic of 35.7 million tonnes, which means the highest activity registered by the port in its history during January-April.
As indicated by the port authority, the data represents an increase over the same period of the previous year of 9.5%, mainly due to the increase in liquid bulk, which reached 10.6 million tonnes, compared to the solid bulk, which fell to 571,471 tonnes.
General cargo traffic exceeded 23 million tonnes, of which 20 million tonnes corresponded to goods transported in containers. The number of container ships amounted to 1,123 units, of which more than 5% were mega ships, with a capacity to transport between 16,000 and 22,000 TEUs.
The port authority has indicated that this upward trend is also reflected in the import and export traffic between Europe and Morocco, which until April amounted to 111,373 trucks, 45% more. Ro-ro traffic totalled 123,770 units due to the drop in cargo on the line that supplies Ceuta.
