Shanghai, Greece (PortSEurope) November 8, 2019 – As part of the efforts of the Greek delegation in Shanghai to promote business between the two countries, an agreement was signed between Juneyao Air Co. Ltd President, Zhao Hong Liang, and the Greek Secretary General of Tourism, Konstantinou Loulis, for a the direct air link between Athens and Shanghai. The routes could start in July 2020.
The aim is to boost the number of Chinese tourists visiting Greece. Konstantinos Loulis said that of the more than 140 million Chinese tourists who traveled abroad in 2018, only 125,000 visited Greece, a number Greece would like to see quadrupled.
The increased level of tourism could link up with the expanding cruise ship facilities being built in Piraeus port by China’s COSCO Shipping Ports Limited, operator of Piraeus Port Authority. Most of COSCO’s masterplan for the port has been recently approved by the Greek authorities, and this includes a new cruise ship terminal and hotel facilities. It is likely that this could tie up with Chinese tourists arriving by airline to visit Greece and, or, take a cruise around the Mediterranean Sea.
