Bilbao, Spain (PortSEurope) November 18, 2019 – Bahía de Bizkaia Gas (BBG), the main supplier of natural gas for domestic, commercial and industrial consumption located in Bilbao port, has received 53 ships so far this year, 19 more than in all of 2018.
The plant operates at 60% of its capacity (double the total of the six plants in operation in Spain), expected to rise to 70% by the end of the year.
This is due to the high demand for gas and the origin of the vessels that transport liquefied natural gas (LNG) that prefer to do so in the Atlantic zone, and choose the plant located in Bilbao.
The demand for natural gas in Spain has increased by 16.9% in the first nine months of 2019 compared to the same period of 2018, reaching 294 TWh, which is the highest cumulative figure since 2009. According to BBG, this increase is mainly due to an extraordinary demand for natural gas for electricity generation and greater industrial consumption. It also highlights the role played by regasification plants such as Bizkaia Gas Bay (BBG).
Bahía de Bizkaia Gas owns a liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification plant located in the port of Bilbao, municipality of Zierbena, Bizkaia. It unloads LNG from methane around the world and coverts it into natural gas for domestic, commercial and industrial consumption as well as for the generation of electricity.
