Almeria, Spain (PortSEurope) February 22, 2021 – The general director of Baleària Operations, César Rodríguez, has met with the president of Autoridad Portuaria de Almería (APA – Port Authority of Almería), Jesús Caicedo, to whom he has presented the plans and projects of the shipping company for the port, where it operates the lines with Melilla and the Moroccan port of Nador. In addition to analyzing
the situation of the sector as a result of the measures against covid-19, the meeting addressed the recent award of the contract for the regular ferry service between Almería and Melilla to the shipping company chaired by Adolfo Utor. The new contract will be undertaken by Baleària exclusively from April 1, with the new ship ‘Hypatia de Alejandría’ (a 2019 smart ship that sails on gas and with capacity for 880 people), which will carry out three weekly rotations. The shipping company, among other commitments, will apply a reduction of 1% to each of the maximum rates set in the specifications and an emission control (NOx) of 41,220 grams / hour. Recently, the shipping company has started in Almería the loading of LNG on its ferry ‘Bahama Mama’, one of the ships that uses natural gas for its propulsion, a much cleaner energy source than conventional fuels, for which the shipping company is committed to reducing CO2 emissions by 35%, NOx emissions by 85%, and eliminating sulfur emissions. The shipping company already sails with six ships with dual natural gas engines – among them the ‘Hypatia de Alejandría’ – which by the end of the year will be nine: six of them re-motorized, and another three of new construction. This project reaffirms Baleària’s commitment to being the reference shipping company in Almería and in the region, creating a network of stable maritime highways between the peninsula, Ceuta, Melilla and North Africa. Also present at the meeting, representing the shipping company, were Manuel Rejano, head of the South Zone of Baleària, and Manuel González, delegate of the shipping company in Almería. On behalf of the APA, the director, Juan Manuel Reyes; the head of the Department of Exploitation and Conservation, Mari Ángeles Guarnido; and the head of the Port Operations and Services Unit, Jesús Rodríguez. Baleària Eurolínias Marítimas S.A. is a leading Spanish shipping line in passenger and cargo services to the Balearics, providing daily connections between the islands and the mainland (via the ports of Barcelona, Valencia and Denia), and the only company in the sector to operate inter-island sailings to all four islands of the archipelago. It is also one of the largest operators in the Straits of Gibraltar linking Ceuta and Melilla to mainland ports.
