Barcelona, Spain (PortSEurope) February 11, 2019 – Barcelona port has approved the launch of a railway coordination centre and has tendered the engineering service for the functional design and implementation of the facilities, with an estimated budget of €1.3 million ($1.47 million).

The contract for the design of the railway command centre will be for two years and offers may be submitted until March 14. The offers will be opened on April 25.

Barcelona port registered record results in rail transport in 2018 – both of containers and vehicles. A total of 262,379 containers of rail transport were registered, up 7.7%. This result has increased the port’s railway share to 13.3%.

The train has also gained weight as a means of transport for the arrival and departure of vehicles to port terminals. In total, the rail transport of automobiles exceeded 263,900 units, up 11%, a result that has raised the railway share of vehicles to 36.2%. In 2018, rail services at the port of Barcelona saved a total of 55,200 tonnes of CO2.
