Barcelona, Spain (PortSEurope) June 12, 2018 – Barcelona port applied port taxes amounting to €13.7 million ($16.1 million) in 2017, with the aim of increasing the competitiveness of customers and operators who channel goods for the harbour. The total value of the bonuses was 24% higher than in the previous year.
Shipping companies that operated at the port benefited from ship rate bonuses worth €7.6 million ($9 million). With these discounts, strategic traffic has been enhanced, such as containers, vehicles and the motorways of the sea, with the aim of increasing the frequencies of the regular lines and expanding connectivity with new destinations. The discounts on the ship rates also contribute to the loyalty and consolidation of the existing maritime services.
With regard to the motorways of the sea, Barcelona port relies on the increase of frequency and offer of alternative intermodal connections to the road transport. The diversion of trucks involves a significant reduction in logistics costs.
In the segment of cruise traffic, bonuses have been applied to the newest and most energy-efficient ships and those cruises that call in the city during the winter months.
In relation to the passenger rate, the port has applied discounts to increase the volume of cruise passengers in the base port regime and the savings for the companies have exceeded €1 million ($1.2 million).
