Barcelona, Spain (PortSEurope) November 18, 2019 – Barcelona port has reported total cargo of 57.6 million tons of merchandise handled in the months January-October this year, up 1.3% in the same period of the previous year.
Liquid bulks saw an increase of 8.8% to reach 13.9 million tons.
Containers registered a total of 2.8 million TEU, a figure similar to 2018. Imports of full containers have added 501,110 TEU between the months of January and October, up 1.9% increase. Exports of full containers, however, have registered traffic of 605,496 TEUs, a decrease of 3.4%. Containers filled in traffic have also suffered a fall, in this case of 5.1%, and remain at 955,457 TEU.
By countries, China, the United States, Turkey, Algeria and the Union of the Arab Emirates are, in this order, the main origins and destinations of the containers that are channeled through the port. In the case of exports, China, Algeria, Union of the Arab Emirates, the United States and Turkey occupy the first places, while in imports the first places are occupied by China, Turkey, India, South Korea and the United States.
Egypt (+11.4%), Turkey (+10%), Saudi Arabia (+9.7%), United States (+4.3%) and Japan (+3.8%) are the countries that have a greater dynamism in its exchanges with Barcelona. With regard to other types of cargo, in the bulk liquids sector, the growth of products such as biofuels (+145.5%), oils and fats (+32.7%), diesel (+21.8%) and chemicals (+6.1%).
With respect to bulk solids, between January and October of this year the port added 3.4 million tons.
With regard to cars, the movement registered in the specialized terminals of the port of between January and October has been 655,146 units. Although this figure is 2.9% below the vehicles moved in the first ten months of 2018, the momentum that this traffic is having in this end of the year is making it recover the ground lost in the first months of the year. Thus, in October, car traffic has grown by 12.9% in the port of Barcelona compared to the same month of the previous year. The growth in September was 21.7% and in August, 12.2%.
As for passengers, until October the port of Barcelona received about 4.2 million travelers, an increase of 2.9%. Ferry travellers add up to 1.4 million (+3.4%), while cruise passengers reached 2.8 million (+2.7%).
Goods moved in the short sea shipping services totaled a total of 27 million tons. This figure represents an increase of 0.9% compared to the January-October 2018 period.
