Brindisi Port Dredging Project Challenged

Brindisi, Italy (PortSEurope) August 14, 2019 – The technical commission of Environmental Impact Verification (Via e Vas) has rejected the request made by Autorita’ di Sistema Portuale del Mare Adriatico Meridionale (AdSP – Southern Adriatic Sea Port Authority) concerning the project for the the completion of Brindisi port infrastructure by means of quay and construction between the petrochemical wharf and the Costa Morena Est.

The rejection is due to the lack of the supplementary documentation required in relation to the characterization and management of dredging of sediment. Requests for further information were not forthcoming.

Tito Vespasiani, general secretary of the AdSP replied saying that the technical quality of the design has not been called into question. According to Vespasiani “the negative evaluation is strictly connected to the knowledge gap, concerning the updating of the characterization of the sediments affected by the possible work

He added that in this regard, it should be noted that the AdSP has given ample feedback on the subject during the procedure (now almost two years ago).
