Cartagena Port Increases Glycerin Exports

Cartagena port increases glycerin exports

Cartagena, Spain (PortSEurope) January 11, 2021 – The Port of Cartagena has reported a 150% increase in the export of glycerin in 2020, a by-product of the production of biodiesel from palm oil that is produced at the Masol plant, located in the Valle Escombreras.  The president of Autoridad Portuaria de Cartagena (APC – Port Authority of Cartagena), Yolanda Muñoz, said that “the Port of
Cartagena is consolidated as a port of departure for products from Cartagena and its hinterland bound for Europe, and specifically in the case of glycerin to the Netherlands”. Last week, the oil tanker Lessow Swan, with a Danish flag and consigned by Bergé Marítima, loaded 1,100 tons of glycerine in the South dock of the Escombreras dock.  Muñoz explained that, “in this year 2020, glycerin exports have increased by 27,000 tons, doubling the 2019 figures, with more than 11,000 tons” and highlighted “some figures that continue to consolidate the Port of Cartagena as a benchmark for liquid bulk , placing us as the fourth most important port at the national level and among the 25 ports that grow the most in Europe. ” Worldwide, ports move close to 950,000 tons of glycerin annually in the United States and Europe.  Liquid bulk accounts for 75% of the volume of traffic handled by the Port of Cartagena. In 2020, liquid bulk traffic is more than 25.2 million tons, figures very similar to 2019 despite the drop in fuel and diesel consumption as a result of the health crisis.  Glycerin has a wide range of uses in the food industry and in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Due to its sweetness, it can be used as a sweetener in drinks. In addition, it can act as a humectant, that is, a substance that absorbs and retains moisture from the surroundings. This is very useful when used in baked goods, as it helps to keep them fresh.  The mentioned properties also make glycerin useful in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. For example, in toothpastes, skin care products, shaving creams, and mouthwashes.  Copyright (C) PortSEurope.
