China is a country in East Asia and the most populous country in the world. It has a well-developed port sector and several large companies with European ports and shipping activities, including COSCO Shipping Ports, COSCO Lines, China Merchants Group and Shanghai International Port Group. It has a key role as a supplier of a vast amount of cargo to European markets, via a number of European Mediterranean Sea ports. It has holdings in a number of these ports. Its trade routes with Europe are widely known as the new Silk Road.
