Concerns about Chinese management at Haifa port

Haifa, Israel (PortSEurope) September 15, 2018 – Shanghai International Port Group is reported to be the manager of the newly expanded Haifa port which is expected to open in 2021 which is causing concern internationally.

Such a move would be part of recent activities by the Chinese government to acquire transport facilities along the New Silk Road – including acquiring long-term port concessions, such as Piraeus port in Greece.

Haifa port is located close to the primary base of the Israeli Navy.

Both the Israeli Armed Forces and U.S. officials have indicated concerns about such a significant Chinese presence in Israel and the control of Chinese infrastructure investment in Israel.
