The container ship Containerships Borealis, one of the newest and largest ships in the Containerships fleet, has become the first LNG-powered ship to dock in the Port of Bilbao. Inaugurated in March of this year, it is 170 meters long, 27 meters wide, with a draft of 9.6 meters and a capacity for 1,380 containers. The ship has docked at the container terminal managed by CSP Iberian

As part of the CMA CGM group, Containerships has long and actively worked on the sustainability of intermodal transport. For this and, in a pioneering way, it offers a package of products that promote the energy transition from fuel oil to LNG as a fuel for maritime transport. The four products that Containerships CMA CGM offers to reduce the carbon footprint are Cleaner Energy LNG, Cleaner Energy Biofuel, Cleaner Energy Biomethane and Positive offset. They are offered for each shipment and are certified by an independent third party, so that the company contracting the product can reconcile it with its internal sustainability and quality policies. Thanks to CLEANER ENERGY LNG, customers can carry out the maritime transport of their journey segment using LNG or, in the absence of an LNG vessel on the route they carry out, offset their emissions with the purchase of LNG credits, receiving an official certificate from the Offset emissions are associated with your specific shipments. The use of LNG technology helps to significantly reduce harmful emissions, including up to 99% of sulfur emissions (SOx), 92% of nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and 91% of particulate matter. (PM10). CO2 emissions can be reduced by 15% in the fuel production and utilization cycle and up to 23% in the tank-to-tank cycle. Sustainability has long become the objective of its entire intermodal transport offer, which translates into the construction of ships and the purchase of trucks powered by LNG, in a clear and firm commitment to offering sustainable products. Projects for the energy transition The Port of Bilbao welcomes other projects to improve the energy transition and include renewable methods. On the one hand, since 2005, it has a wind farm made up of five Gamesa wind turbines that produce 17,500 MWh / year to supply the General Network. It is managed by the company Energías Renovables el Abra. On the other hand, together with Remolcadores Ibaizabal, Murueta Shipyards, Puertos del Estado, Enagas and the Basque Government, through the Basque Energy Entity, the Bilbao Port Authority has participated in the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) call, Call 2014 F02, of the CORE LNGas Hive project, which aims to contribute to the decarbonization of the European corridors of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. In this context, the Basque Country has led three LNG implementation projects in the maritime field, which have received funding from the European Commission. These projects have allowed us to acquire a wide degree of technological development and specialization, positioning us in the first line of the world in this matter, and they are: The adaptation, in 2018, of the dock of the Bahía de Bizkaia Gas regasification plant so that small ships can load liquefied gas from these facilities.The launch, also in 2018, of an LNG supplier ship capable of supplying ships ship to ship, both in port and abroad.The construction and commissioning, in 2020, of a natural gas tugboat, the first in Spain, led by the Ibaizabal Group. On the other hand, it is preparing an energy transition plan in order to decarbonize the port activity of Bilbao in 2050, in which, among other studies, it is analyzing the supply of Bio LNG at the dock; and, on the other hand, it promotes the installation of a system for the storage and supply of LNG fuel to ships. Added to all this is the installation of cold ironing for 2023 and other key and strategic projects by Repsol / Petronor, which will make it a decarbonisation hub in 2024. One of these projects consists of the construction of one of the world’s largest plants for the production of synthetic fuels from green hydrogen, generated with renewable energy. The main characteristic of these fuels is that they are produced with water and CO 2 as the only raw material, and can be used in combustion engines of cars, trucks or airplanes, as well as other applications. This plant will make the Port of Bilbao a fundamental piece in the Basque Hydrogen Corridor. Subsequently, the aforementioned project will be complemented with a gas generation plant from urban waste, such as paper, cardboard, plastic and textiles, which will avoid using traditional fuels and will promote a circular economy. Initially, this pyrolysis plant will be able to process around 10,000 tons per year of urban waste, a figure that can amount to 100,000 tons in later phases. This gas will be used as fuel for the refinery itself. To all this is added that intermodal and maritime services are promoted, which contributes, in the same way, to decarbonisation.
