Barcelona, Spain (PortSEurope) February 11, 2019 – Decathlon SA, the French seller of sports equipment, is to rent a site of 96,000 m² in ZAL (La Zona de Actividades Logísticas del puerto de Barcelona) of the port of the Catalan capital, doubling its current capacity.
It already has a space of 50,000m² on this site, but expansion requires an extension of premises. Decathlon aims to handle 60,000 TEU containers of goods per year at the location which will serve its southern European outlets. Most of the containers arrive from Asia, making Barcelona an ideal distribution centre.
The company’s investment is worth €60 million ($67.89 million).
The new facility, which Cilsa will begin construction in the summer of 2019, will also allow it to boost its online growth strategy in Spain, by providing ultrafast delivery services and store collection to tight deadlines.
ZAL Port is the intermodal logistics platform of the port of Barcelona. Its objective is to generate maritime traffic with logistics infrastructure services with added value to the merchandise. Cilsa SA is the company that manages the Logistics Area of the Port of Barcelona.
