Alicante, Spain (PortSEurope) November 27, 2018 – The European Parliament has closed the investigation opened in August of 2017 into the loading and unloading of bulk in Alicante port considering that the activity does not breach the community law on industrial emissions and air quality.
In a resolution of last June that has been just been revealed, the Parliament reports that the European Commission does not plan to investigate the facts raised in a petition against Alicante port.
The directive that regulates industrial emissions establishes norms to avoid contamination derived from industrial activity and, when this is not possible, to reduce it. This directive applies to various activities, listed exhaustively, but does not include port activities.
As for the directive on Air Quality, it requires that member states respect the relevant limit values for different air pollutants after certain dates. Once they have managed to comply with these standards, they must maintain the levels below the established limit values. The Commission concludes that according to the latest available data, for 2016, measurements do not show that limit values have been exceeded.
