Ferrol, Spain (PortSEurope) August 25, 2020 – The commitment of the Port Authority of Ferrol-San Cibrao to container traffic has translated into positive results. The Caneliñas dock reached record figures after the start-up of the two lines of the Containerships company that currently link the port of Ferrol with the United Kingdom, Ireland and Northern Europe. According to provisional data, in the first seven months of
2020, 6,199.75 TEU’s were moved, up 30.25% compared to the same period last year. July registered an increase of 1,404 TEUs (+91%). The movement of containerized goods in these same periods also follows the upward trend. In July, 13,259 tons were moved, 70.19% more. The increase is 14.62% if compared to the accumulated of the first seven months of 2020. A total of 62,768 tons moved in containers compared to 54,761 in the same period of the previous year. The new commercial connections are a new opportunity for the internationalization of local companies, since it allows them to access more markets at a lower cost. Likewise, they facilitate the commercial transactions of the Galician business fabric in the current scenario marked by Brexit, since it allows them to have an additional service and new connections with the United Kingdom.  The two regular lines of container traffic are part of the Ferrol-San Cibrao Port Authority’s strategy to diversify its traffic and strengthen business lines such as the container market, which increased activity in the Caneliñas dock. In addition, they demonstrate the commitment to Ferrol de Containerships, a shipping company that is a benchmark in Europe for short sea shipping. Yilport Ferrol is the concessionaire of the Ferrol container terminal, one of the largest in the European Atlantic. It is a subsidiary of the Turkish Yildirim Group, an industrial giant that ranks among the world’s leading container operators.
