Gioia Tauro, Italy (PortSEurope) March 18, 2021 – Grandi Lavori Fincosit SpA has started construction work on the western quay of the port of Gioia Tauro, an investment of €12.6 million ($15 million). The client is Port Authority of Gioia Tauro (Autorità Portuale di Gioia Tauro). The work will produce a dry dock quay of 400 metres with a draft of -17 metres and a
part of a wider plan to relaunch the port in Reggio Calabria. In 2020, the port handled 39.68 million tons of cargo, up 36.3% on the previous 12 months. Earlier this week, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility approved the 2021 Budget and the related three-year Operational Plan 2021-2023 of the Port Authority. In the plan are various financial measures intended to support the construction of infrastructural works that define the strategy adopted by the Port Authority, led by the extraordinary commissioner Andrea Agostinelli, to support the development of the authority’s four ports – Gioia Tauro, Crotone, Taureana di Palmi & Corigliano Calabro. The prime objective of the plan is also to differentiate the port’s offer and to integrate the water-front services with those of the retroport and intermodal logistics, to relaunch port activities and, thus, ensure its position and role in the Mediterranean region.
