Fiumicino, Fregene Beach At Risk With The New Commercial Port

Livorno, Italy (PortSEurope) December 5, 2018 – On Thursday, at the Fiumicino office of Autorita’ di Sistema Portuale del Mar Tirreno Centro-Settentrionale (AdSP – Centre-North Tyrrhenian Sea Port Authority), President Di Majo met the delegation of Balnearia – Assobalneari Fiumicino, Federturismo Confindustria.

The issue is concern that the proposed development of Fiumicino Commercial Port will have negative effects on nearby areas such as the coastline of Fregene Sud.

Since 1998, the year in which the first drafting of the port has been presented, seaside resorts have been paying the attention to this infrastructure, focusing on any heavy territorial repercussions, especially erosion.

There is the risk that the whole coast will suffer fatal damage and even affect other neighboring coastal municipalities. President Di Majo, during the meeting, showed a new sensitivity and attention, not found so far, representing the commitment by the AdSP to study solutions of protection and refreshment also of an economic nature, as required by the seaside resorts, for any damage caused by the infrastructure.

“The meeting was very important”, says Simonetta Mancini, President of Balnearia-Assobalneari Fiumicino,”Because after so many years, it was readily taken on the one hand that the port could do further serious damage to places already in the extreme, on the other that development must be sustainable, not just in words, monitoring and supporting all the implementation phases until realistically recognizing any compensations
