Genoa, Italy (PortSEurope) February 8, 2019 – Genoa port’s largest cargo traffic partner for 2018 was Taranto, followed by Milazzo and Singapore, an import/export report drafted by the port authority shows.
The very strong relationship of Genoa with the port of Taranto, from which 3.46 million tonnes of cargo were imported in 2018, has two reasons: the main factory of steelmaker Ilva, located in Apulia, shipped 2.12 million tonnes of solid bulk to its plant in Cornigliano, while the Eni refinery handled 1.29 million tonnes of liquid bulk traffic.
For similar reasons – that is the presence of a refinery of which Eni is a shareholder – the second port of origin of goods imported into Genoa in 2018 is Milazzo, with 1.45 million tonnes, followed by Singapore which is on the third place.
From the Asian port last year, 1.38 million tonnes of cargo arrived in Genoa, almost all in containers. Equally important was the flow of traffic in the opposite direction: Singapore is in fact the first port of destination for goods leaving for export from the port of Genoa, with 1.42 million tonnes.
The second Asian port to appear in the authority statistics is Shanghai, 7th in the import ranking with 1.02 million tonnes and 6th as export destination, with 600,000 tonnes.
