Thessaloniki, Greece (PortSEurope) October 13, 2019 – Hellenic Railways Organisation (OSE) has awarded a €2.16 million contract to Omega Consulting Engineers to prepare design work for the construction of the Thessaloniki–Amfipolis–Nea Karvali railway, which is included in the EU’s TEN-T core network. The current Thesssaloniki–Alexandroupolis line will have a new connection with Kavala near Toxotes Xanthis. The new line will form part of the Thessaloniki
– Amphipolis – Kavala – Xanthi rail corridor, which is included in the European Union’s TEN-T core network. The EU’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) will provide 50% of the funding. Connecting Kavala to the main railway network, as well as to other regional ports, aims to develop business for the port, with transport links to Bulgaria in the north and Turkey in the east. The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Transport is the funding instrument to realise European transport infrastructure policy. It aims at supporting investments in building new transport infrastructure in Europe or rehabilitating and upgrading the existing one.
