Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy (PortSEurope) May 15, 2019 – The German shipping company Hapag-Lloyd AG has announced that it will stop calling the port of Cagliari, Italy with the Europe Mediterranean Express (EMX) as from week.
This decision has been taken in line with various restructurings of other Hapag-Lloyd Mediterranean services and in order to improve the schedule reliability of the EMX.
Whilst it is not unusual for shipping companies to changes ports of call for specific services, the announcement comes at a difficult time for Cagliari port. Last month, Italy’s deputy transport minister Edoardo Rixi has held a meeting with the management of Cagliari port to discuss a crisis at the harbour and the 700 jobs a risk.
Italian company Iterc SRL, an operator assisting the handling of containers at Cagliari port, has seen a decline in container traffic at the harbour, threatening employments levels.
Another company active in the port, CTS SRL, has the same issue.
