Barcelona, Spain (PortSEurope) November 22, 2018 – Barcelona Europe South Terminal (BEST), part of Hutchison Ports, has started a weekly container rail service connecting Barcelona and the French city of Lyon.
The average journey time will be around six hours.
This expands the company’s logistics offering in southern Europe, which includes the new rail service connecting Barcelona port to Miranda de Ebro, in Burgos province, in northern Spain.
The terminal’s rail traffic has doubled to 20% of full local traffic between 2010 and 2018 with almost a 100 trains a week serving points throughout the Iberian Peninsular.
In January-September 2018, Barcelona port reported a 10.5% year-on-year rise in rail traffic with a total of 199,000 TEUs arriving and departing. Overall container traffic rose 13.5% to over 2.5 million TEUs.
Hutchison Ports BEST is the first semi-automated terminal in the Hutchison Ports Group and the most technologically advanced port development project in Spain. It is capable of serving multiple mega-vessels simultaneously and has an eight-track railway facility, the biggest on-dock railway terminal of any port in the Mediterranean, connecting it to traffic coming from, and destined for, Southern Europe.
