Messina, Italy (PortSEurope) December 5, 2018 – Italy’s infrastructure ministry has proposed the rental of two vessels with a reinforced hull to Liberty Lines, in order to avoid the dismissal of the company’s workforce.
The two vessels, owned by Italian state-owned railway company Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), can be leased to Liberty Ferries as of January 1, 2019, and will be operated to service the link between Messina and Reggio Calabria, the ministry said.
The measure would save the jobs of 45 employees of Liberty Lines.
In October 2018, Bluferries shipping company started operating a fast passenger service across the Strait of Messina between and Reggio Calabria (mainland Italy) and Messina (Sicily). It replaced a service provided by Liberty Lines under three-year contract with the Ministry of Transport (MIT) which expired.
