Venice, Italy (PortSEurope) December 4, 2018 – Italian shipping agents association Federagenti has denounced a number of “fake news” items that are aimed at damaging the cruise business development of Venice port.

The list of fake news, disproved by the facts, begins with the contradiction that ships destroy the Venetian lagoon: “a recent study by Studio Rinaldo shows that the causes of the erosion of the Lagoon are to be found not in the ships, but in the breakwaters,” Federagenti said.

A thesis to be debunked is also that the cruise passengers are responsible for the tourist invasion, as they “affect less than 5% of the total of over 30 million tourists”.

It is not true either that ships pollute the air of Venice, as “they are the least polluting means of transport, an analysis carried out by a German environmental research centre shows”.

In addition, the foundations of Venetian buildings are not eroded by the wave motion caused by the transit of ships.
