Trieste, Italy (PortSEurope) September 5, 2019 – As part of Autorita’ di Sistema Portuale del Mare Adriatico Orientale (AdSP – Eastern Adriatic Sea Port Authority), Monfalcone port is seeking the same free port (Punto Franca) status as the AdSP’s leading port – Trieste.

A decision that arose following a motion by the local Democratic Party, convinced that an extension of Trieste’s privilege would revitalize Monfalcone. Proponents argue that this would increase the competitiveness of the port in the face of increasing competition.

AdSP General Secretary Mario Sommariva commented that the two ports complimented each other: “The relationship between Monfalcone and Trieste is a relationship of complementarity and integration. The Punto Franco is very advantageous for the traffic that is directed towards countries outside the European Union. This, in a climate of trade wars, helps a lot. However, conversely, it is very disadvantageous with the European Union. I believe that a differentiated offer and complementarity are much more useful.
