Nantes St-Nazaire, France (PortSEurope) July 14, 2018 – The new Boulevard des Apprentis was inaugurated on July 6, a key step in the redevelopment of the Saint-Nazaire industrial and port zone.
The improved road, 1.2 km long and 21 m wide, is part of a more comprehensive program to support the handling of larger cargo units at the port.
In June 2016, Nantes Saint-Nazaire Port (Grand Port Maritime de Nantes Saint-Nazaire), local authorities and industrialists in the Saint-Nazaire industrial and port zone started the process and two years later, the first step is taken with the completion of this XXL-sized boulevard.
The industrial and port area of Saint-Nazaire is the heart of the Loire’s aeronautics, shipbuilding and ship repair, metal and mechanical construction sectors. In recent years, they have experienced a strong rise around the development of companies, such as Chantiers de l’Atlantique (STX France) or MAN Energy Solutions SE. The site is also becoming a key element in the emerging marine renewable energy sector.
The new boulevard thus offers an XXL connection between two complementary sites: the Montoir industrial and logistics hub (the multi-cargo and container terminal, the ro-ro terminal) and the Saint-Nazaire basins and its infrastructure adapted to heavy parcels. A secondary road, the penetrating south, will connect, in a second time this boulevard to the logistics hub dedicated to marine renewable energies.
The requalification of the sector also includes the modernization of mobile bridges and locks, to ensure the reliability of the works and secure maritime and road flows. This five-year program began with the East Lock (civil engineering resumption) and the upstream gate of the Joubert form (deck renovation). These first works must be completed by the end of the year.
As a reminder, the global redevelopment operation of the Saint-Nazaire industrial and port zone, included in the 2015-2020 State Region Plan Contract, represents an investment of €30 million ($35.1 million), financed by the State, the Country Region of the Loire, the Loire-Atlantique Department, Saint-Nazaire Agglomeration, the City of Saint-Nazaire, Nantes Saint-Nazaire Port and private companies.
