Piraeus, Greece (PortSEurope) November 8, 2018 – China’s new ambassador to Greece, Zhang Qiyue, has visited the Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry and met with President Mr. V. Korkidis.
The ambassador held talks at the chamber and the leading topic was the rapid development and the increasingly important role of Piraeus port, future investment plans for Piraeus Port Authority SA (which is operated by China’s COSCO Shipping Ports Limited), increased interest in the city and the opportunities for further Greek-Chinese cooperation within China’s One Belt-One Road Initiative (new Silk Road).
Other issues that were discussed were the options for Greek shipping equipment companies in China, cooperation between COSCO and enterprises in Piraeus, utilising local knowledge on shipping, reviving the domestic shipbuilding and ship repair markets, increasing tourism flows and the presentation of the Maritime Hellas cluster.
Zhang Qiyue described Piraeus port as “the Head of the Dragon” and the “crown” of Greek-Chinese cooperation.
Present at the meeting were Li Feng, Commerce Attaché of the Embassy of China in Greece, A. Potamianos, President of the Greek-Chinese Association, K. Giannidis, President of the Greek-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and G. Xiradakis, President of the Propeller Club of Piraeus.
COSCO also operates Piraeus Container Terminal SA.
