New Kars logistics centre to start operations

Ankara, Turkey (PortSEurope) June 15, 2021 – A new logistics centre in the Turkish city of Kars will soon become operational and will have key transport links to national railways and ports. Kars is a city in northeast Turkey and forms part of the 829-km Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway, a regional rail link project connecting Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. The new centre will be connected to
the high-speed railway line in Sivas province which will have onwards links to national railways. These will provide links to the country’s current and planned ports. The developments are part of a countrywide logistics strategy to develop Turkey’s cargo transport capacity, as the country seeks a role in developing regional transport corridors. These are, in turn, part of wider Asia-Europe transport corridors. The TL150m (€15 million) cargo facility is linked to the main BTK line by a 7 km spur. It has 19 sidings totalling 20.5 km over an area of 400 000 m², including an 80,000 m² container handling area with 60,000 m² of storage space. The site can handle trains from Turkey’s 1,435 mm standard gauge network as well as the 1,520 mm broad gauge used in the former USSR, with customs clearance undertaken at the site rather than at the border. The BTK railway is part of the Middle Corridor, also known as the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR). The Middle Corridor combines the countries participating in the new Silk Road project and important players of the region. Its members are leading maritime and transport companies from Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Ukraine, China and Turkey. The organisation aims to popularise the middle corridor, accelerate and simplify cargo transportation procedures between Asia and Europe, and make special preferential tariffs. Between East and West, in terms of cargo, the middle corridor helps to compete with the north-south routes.TITR allows European companies to bypass Russia, which until now sanctions the transit of certain types of goods through the country. A number of Russian entities are under sanctions from the international community following Russia’s annexation of the Crimea in 2014.
