Next stage of expansion increases capacity at HHLA Container Terminal Odessa

With investments totalling €170 million, HHLA Container Terminal Odessa (CTO) will be expanded to become one of the most efficient and state-of-the-art port facilities on the Black Sea. This investment is one of the biggest coming from a German company in Ukraine – November 6, 2020 The project expands the CTO terminal area to include the new “Quarantine mole”. Now the yard directly behind the recently
cleared quayside can be put into operation for storing containers. The yard will be used efficiently by mobile portal cranes (RTGs). In combination with the large container gantry cranes, which are optimally suited for all the container ships that sail the Black Sea (Bosphorus-Max), the CTO can significantly increase its container throughput capacities. In cooperation with the Ukrainian port authority USPA, 7.5 hectares of the total 19.3 hectares of newly acquired port areas have already been made available for operations. Further stages of the expansion are being planned. In 2019, CTO was the largest Ukrainian container terminal, with a throughput of over 390,000 standard containers. The new Quarantine mole has already made it possible to process two container ships with draughts of up to 14 metres at the same time. The port terminal will add two additional rail tracks at the beginning of 2021 to double rail throughput capacity and meet the increasing demand for rail transport.
