Confucius Institute – November 11, 2019
On November 11th, President Xi Jinping met with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens during his state visit to Greece. After the meeting, both leaders attended the agreement exchange ceremony of bilateral cooperation documents, including Agreement between the Confucius Institute of China and the University of Thessaly, Greece, to Establish a Confucius Institute Department in the Greek University signed by the Confucius Institute Headquarters and the University of Thessaly.
Founded in 1984, the University of Thessaly is a renowned comprehensive public university in Greece. Its administrative and academic center is in the city of Volos, with 37 departments and colleges, more than 40,000 students and 1,200 teachers. Its Chinese partner is the Central University of Finance and Economics.
There are 2 Confucius Institutes and 1 Confucius Classroom in Greece, forming an important platform for teaching Chinese and promoting people-to-people exchanges between the two sides. The establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Thessaly will further provide high-quality services to local people for learning Chinese and Chinese culture. It will make positive contributions to the promotion of people-to-people exchanges and friendship between China and Greece.
The agreement was signed by Zhang Qiyue, Chinese Ambassador to Greece, on behalf of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, and Zissis Mamouris, Rector of the University of Thessaly.
