Almeria, Spain (PortSEurope) October 28, 2020 – The president of Puertos del Estado, the public-owned organisation responsible for the management of state-owned ports, Francisco Toledo, has held a meeting with Jesús Caicedo, president of the Almería Port Authority, in which they agreed on the 2020-2024 Business Plan, a period in which more than €36 million will be invested. Among the most relevant actions are the
drafting of the land connection project of the Exterior Dam with the Pechina Pier and the 1st phase of the extension of the Pechina Pier, involving a global investment of €23 million. These actions will allow the development of the Poniente del Puerto area, so it can accommodate large draft vessels. They agreed to propose to the General Directorate of Roads of MITMA the signing of a collaboration protocol that provides legal coverage to the updating of the project of connection of the port of Almería with the A-7 through the roundabout of Fish shop. The updated project will be fully financed by the Port Terrestrial Accessibility Financial Fund, and its execution will favor the exit to the Pescadería roundabout, located in the middle of the Vía Parque, with access to the city, congested by the circulation of light vehicles, as well as the access of trucks of horticultural products to the port area. Also discussed was the progress regarding the Modification of the Special Management Plan for the stay and waiting area for port boarding: passenger service area of the Port of Almería (Bayyana). This modification is necessary as it is affected by the road access project for the A-7. The conversion of the port facilities in Carboneras to other industrial uses is also being studied due to the closure of the Endesa Thermal Power Plant. According to Caicedo, they have on the table a circular economy project that provides new uses for more than 300,000 tons of used oils. Port traffic was also analyzed, especially in passenger traffic. The reduction in the movement of passengers with North Africa will cause, in a temporary way, losses of more than €1 million. Regarding port-city actions, the President of the Port Authority reported the progress of the rehabilitation works of the English Cable, which is 40% complete. It should be remembered that the performance was selected by the Mixed Commission of the Ministry of Transport-Ministry of Culture for financing from the 1.5% Cultural Fund.
