Rijeka, Croatia (PortSEurope) February 13, 2019 – Rijeka port’s container traffic rose 8.1% in 2018 to a record-high 227,375 TEUs, with more than 200,000 TEUs handled at the Brajdica terminal
Record-high results are booked also in the other two large container ports of the North Adriatic, Trieste and Koper. Koper has recorded a growth of 6.3%, which may not sound a lot, but in absolute numbers, the Slovenian port handled 77,000 containers more than a year earlier, and with 988,000 TEUs, it came close to the magic number of one million TEUs yearly.
The highest growth among the three ports in 2018, just like the year before, was achieved by Trieste, with an increase of 14.5% to 625,000 TEUs. The rapid growth of container traffic in the port of Trieste in recent years is mostly associated with the entry of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) into the ownership of the terminal.
