Spanish Port Traffic Exceeds 140 Million Tons In First Quarter Of 2019

Madrid, Spain (PortSEurope) May 14, 2019 – The traffic of goods through state ports handled 140,494,899 tons in the first three months of 2019, an increase 3.55% compared to the same period of 2018.

All sectors reported growth: general cargo (+9.1%), general merchandise in containers (+4.6%), general merchandise package will exceed 67.5 million tons (+5.9%). liquid bulk, at 45.2 million tons, grew by +1.6%, and solid bulks, with 24.5 million tons, increased +0.5%.

Transit goods exceeded 37.3 million tons, an increase of 5.65%.

Ro-Ro traffic accounted for one quarter of general merchandise, 16.3 million tons.

Likewise, container traffic (TEU), exceeded 4.2 million, an increase of 5.5%.

Total passenger traffic exceeded 6 million passengers, of which 4.2 million were regular lines and 1.79 million cruise ships. It was precisely the increase in cruise passenger traffic, + 8.95%, which allowed the joint increase in passenger traffic to reach 4.76%.

Puertos del Estado, the state-run ports system, includes 46 ports of general interest, managed by 28 port authorities, whose coordination and efficiency control corresponds to the government agency Puertos del Estado, a body answerable to the Ministry of Public Works that is responsible for implementing the government’s port policy.
