Tarragona port obtains 214,474 tons of agri-food products

Tarragona, Spain (PortSEurope) August 25, 2020 – Tarragona port received, in a week, 214,474 tons of agri-food products in its facilities. Operations of great complexity, due to the large amount of unloaded product, were carried out mainly in the docks of Aragon and Castile, locations where the transport of goods both by rail and other land means is very agile. The port receives agri-food products from
countries, such as Ukraine, Romania, Argentina, Brazil and the United States. The distribution of these products provides a very important hinterland, which includes all of Catalonia, Aragon and much of Navarre and eastern Castile, locations where more than 40% of total feed production in the state is manufactured. The products are imported through Tarragona and from there are transported to the manufacturing areas for animal feed in Lleida, Zaragoza, Girona and, on a smaller scale, in Soria and Huesca. Tarragona is a leader in the movement of agri-food products, both in Spain and in the Mediterranean, providing the sector with qualified services, high productivity and specialized infrastructures. In 2019, it exceeded six million tonnes in the agri-food and livestock sector, which is a 4.5% increase over 2018. This leadership is based on different strengths. Proximity, productivity, price, experience, quality and specialization are the keys to traffic that positioned the port as a leader in the movement of agri-food products in the Mediterranean. In order to speed up operations and expand its logistics capacity, the Tarragona Port Authority developed a new system for delivering agri-food products called SEA (Agri-Food Delivery System). It is a free digital service that favours the different actors in the process of loading and unloading agri-food goods. Buyers will be able to know the availability of the requested goods and also the day and time of collection by the carrier. It will also be possible to know the demand for a certain period of time and to have the necessary resources to be able to plan deliveries. To facilitate the work to the carrier, since it will have the merchandise located and with the concretion of day, hour and point of delivery, it will reduce the time of stay in the port installations and will optimize his operative. With the aim of knowing the evolution of the agri-food market and its future challenges, the Port of Tarragona decided to replace the biennial face-to-face meeting of the Agrifood agri-food logistics sector initially scheduled for May this year. This new 100% online event will consist of a webinar that will take place on September 30th. This is a special edition that does not eliminate the 3rd edition of the face-to-face meeting, as the Port is confident of being able to celebrate the third edition of Agrifood next year.
