Tarragona, Spain (PortSEurope) September 8, 2019 – During this year, the Port of Tarragona will incorporate eight new cars, following criteria of efficiency to reduce fuel consumption. During 2019, Autoridad Portuaria de Tarragona (APT – Port Authority of Tarragona) will add an electric car, a hybrid and six gasoline-powered vehicle with state-of-the-art technology to replace older cars and much less environmentally friendly diesel engines with its surroundings. This commitment of the port with the environment has allowed the CO2 emissions of its car park to be reduced by 34% in six years.

Six years ago, in 2012, emissions from the car park totalled 131.3 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. While last year they only represented the emission of 86.8 tonnes of CO2. This line of action is the result of the accession of the Port of Tarragona to the program of Voluntary Agreements for the reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases promoted by the Catalan Office for Climate Change. Through this program, the APT calculates its carbon footprint and establishes a commitment to reduce its emissions.

In recent years (2012-2019), the Tarragona Port Authority has opted to continue improving the efficiency of its vehicle fleet. The Port of Tarragona has applied efficiency criteria every time it has renewed its fleet and has been incorporating electric and hybrid passenger cars into its fleet and removing the engines from older engines. The incorporation of more efficient vehicles has allowed the removal of the oldest vehicles that consumed more fuel and caused greater air pollution since they do not have the current emission reduction devices, such as the monitoring of the pressure of the wheels, start -stop, regenerative braking, particle and NOx filters, etc.

The application of these sustainability measures has allowed the reduction of fuel consumption by 19.8% during the last few years, despite almost the same mileage that has only been reduced by 7%. Currently, the APT has a total of 12 electric or hybrid vehicles that represent 12% of the total annual mileage and that are part of a fleet of modern vehicles with the most efficient motor technologies (Euro V and VI).

APT has the Environmental Quality Assurance Award in the fleet category of vehicles whose main purpose is to contribute to the reduction of polluting emissions from transport, promote eco-efficiency and environmental sustainability in planning, projection and management of mobility, especially in urban environments. The objective is to minimize environmental impacts beyond the requirements derived from compliance with current regulations.

The environmental criteria for obtaining this Distinctive are based on fleet management, efficient driving, the type and state of the vehicles and other actions to compromise environmental improvement. For this reason, among other measures, the APT offers efficient driving courses for its workers, encourages the use of video conferencing to avoid journeys and maintains a fleet of low-emission vehicles.
