Telefónica and NTT DATA, the sixth largest IT services company in the world, collaborate to develop a technologically cutting-edge solution for the Port of Malaga using all the advanced 5G communications capabilities – December 16, 2021 The objective set with the Port of Malaga focuses on controlling, in real time, the accesses of the different types of vessels to the mouth of the port area.
The project focuses mainly on security and will allow the deployment of a solution that will record the events associated with each vessel to generate valuable information for port personnel on those that are not allowed to circulate. For this solution, NTT DATA has contributed its portfolio of technological solutions applied to ports, considering the use of analytical capabilities and artificial intelligence capabilities to extract valuable information from the events that will be captured with advanced cameras and 5G communications elements. Telefónica, for its part, has provided its 5G communications network in the city of Malaga and its VDC Edge node in Andalusia for data processing close to the port location and where certain applications and necessary network functions will be hosted. The technology provided by Telefónica and NTT DATA makes it possible to identify vessels that are not allowed access to the port, through 4K video that is processed on a high-performance device at the Edge node using both computer vision and analytical models. The processing of information in real time will allow the generation of useful alarms for port personnel, with a clear focus on early detection and launching of the actions required according to the action protocol. This use case is in addition to the nearly 80 launched since 2018, the year in which Telefónica launched 5G Technological Cities, among which is Malaga, a pioneering initiative in Spain to promote 5G with its application in real customers. Solution industrialization As part of this collaboration and according to the results of this project, NTT DATA and Telefónica will study the possible industrialization of the solution with the aim that it be included in Telefónica’s portfolio of 5G solutions for Spanish ports. Irene Bernal, Director of Innovation in Connectivity at Telefónica, explains: “For Telefónica’s Innovation in Connectivity area it is essential to explore with our clients, as in this case the Port of Malaga, how Telefónica’s 5G can help digital transformation of public administrations and companies, and for this it is essential to have first-rate technological partners such as NTT Data. We want to make our technological capabilities available to our customers by innovating on the best 5G network in Spain. “ For his part, Teodoro López Palacios, partner of the NTT DATA Telecommunications Sector, maintains in this regard: “this initiative is an example of how 5G technology and the capabilities it enables can provide great benefits and advantages when it comes to improving operations in the port sector. For NTT DATA Spain, it is essential to work together with Telefónica, as a true technological partner, in the development of 5G use cases that allow Spain to be among the most advanced countries in obtaining clear benefits from the use of the capabilities offered by this new technology. “ About Telefónica Telefónica is one of the main telecommunications service providers in the world. The company offers fixed and mobile connectivity services, as well as a wide range of digital services for individuals and companies. It is present in Europe and Latin America, where it has more than 365 million clients.
