Vilagarcía, Spain (PortSEurope) December 13, 2021 – The port of Vilagarcía has just set a new annual record for the movement of goods in the accumulated period to end-November, a total of 1,377,631 tons of goods. It is very noteworthy that this record occurs in the absence of a month to end the year, so that in the coming weeks the difference between the 2021
traffic balance and the previous port traffic record, established in 2019 with 1,315,419 tons. The increase over what, to date, was the best year in the history of the port in terms of traffic is already, in the comparison at the end of the eleventh month of the year, of 14%. Forecasts point to a year-end with total traffic close to 1.5 million tons.  This record record of port traffic is accompanied by historical figures in the movement of general merchandise, which adds up to a total of 750,630 tons at the end of November, almost 100,000 tons above the annual maximum in this category, which was 657,000 tons to date. In the liquid and solid bulk categories, although there are no records, if the figures from last year are clearly exceeded, accounting for 248,267 tons of liquid bulk and 378,464 tons of solid bulk, respectively.  These figures represent the consolidation of the traffic balance of the port that has been maintained in recent years, in which general merchandise plays a major role as it accounts for more than half of all tons moved.  It should be noted that these excellent figures have a broad base, since practically all of the most representative products in the traffic distribution of our port contribute to this record. In fact, all solid and liquid bulks are above their records for last year, with the sole exception of cereals, which closed November with 4,248 less than in the same period last year. Regarding general merchandise, growth in this category is based on aluminum and board traffic; Wood also closed the eleventh month of the year positively and only containerized merchandise and paper pulp saw their traffic decrease compared to 2020. Despite the decrease in containerized merchandise, containers continue to lead the traffic of the port of Vilagarcía,  Regarding the figures for the month of November, they once again exceeded 100,000 tons in the month, reaching the figure of 135,023 tons moved, which is 20,000 tons more than in the same month last year.  The president of the Port Authority, José Manuel Cores Tourís, highlights that “it is a satisfaction to close my first year as president of the Port Authority with a traffic record, and I would like to thank the efforts of the port operators and the entire port community , and of course convey my congratulations, as well as all the workers of the Port Authority. These figures are an incentive to continue working hand in hand with all of them to maintain and improve these volumes of traffic in the goods that currently make up the core of our activity, without forgetting other aspects of our management in which we want to influence in a special way, such as improving our positioning as a cruise destination.
