Trabzon port looks to benefit from opening of the Nakhichevan transport corridor

Trabzon, Turkey (PortSEurope) March 1, 2021 – Last November the Presidents of Russia and Azerbaijan and the Prime Minister of Armenia signed the declaration for the cessation of military operations in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan. The agreement has led to some geopolitical changes in the region. Part of the agreement is the establishment of the Nakhchivan Corridor in the Megri region of Southern Armenia,
creating new economic opportunities for regional countries. Using this corridor, Turkey will directly access Azerbaijan without using the land routes of Georgia and Iran. The Trabzon region and its port sees potential advantage here. For more information about the Nakhchivan corridor, please see PortSEurope article Description of the Turkey-Azerbaijan direct road link gained from the Nagorno-Karabakh war Trabzon Governor İsmail Ustaoğlu has visited Trabzon Port and met with Trabzon Liman İşletmeciliği A.Ş General Manager Muzaffer Ermiş, who said that the opening of the Nakhichevan corridor will change the fortunes of the region. He added, “The opening of the Nakhichevan corridor will change the fortunes of this region. The long road through Iran will be shortened through Nakhichevan. I hope that if the rulers of Armenia adapt, it will be possible to reach Central Asia via the ports of Aktau or Turkmenbashi, passing through Yerevan Baku and the Caspian through the Kars Alican Border Gate. In case the Maçka and Kop Mountain tunnels, which are still under construction, are completed, access will be provided to the border gates without being affected by the winter conditions. In this case, truck transportation between Europe and Asia or between Asia and Europe will be carried out by Ro-Ro ships via Trabzon Port and an important commercial activity will occur for our port and city”. This year, the port hopes to exceed 2 million tons of cargo. Trabzon is a city on the Black Sea coast of northeast Turkey. Since the last century, the port had has links with cities in Iran, and played a role in the new Silk Road. It is about 200 km from the Georgian port of Batumi. Any economic development would be boosted by the port’s connections to other Black Sea ports for trade with Europe. Copyright (C) PortSEurope. All Rights Reserved. 2021.
