Valencia, Spain (PortSEurope) February 8, 2019 – Autoridad Portuaria de Valencia (APV – Valenciaport, Port Authority of Valencia) has closed 2018 with historical records in container and automobile traffic.

According to the final data of APV, 5,182,665 TEU were handled, an increase of 7.25% over 2017. This data is an historical record, a milestone which places the port as the first port in Spain and the Mediterranean to reach this figure.

Based on this data, full containers have grown by 5.21% thanks to good records of imports (+11.22%) and transit (5.28%). Exports of full containers increased by 0.64% while empty containers increased by 14.51%.

Car traffic, meanwhile, advanced last year by 3.18% to a total of 820,221 units. This data places Valencia as the leading port of the Spanish port system for this type of traffic. Likewise, the ro-ro traffic registered an increase of 25.14%, with 11,829,219 tons.

In monthly terms, the month of December has been very positive for Valenciaport since its terminals have managed 437,868 TEU, 17.48% more than during the same month of 2017. In December, the full containers of 342,443 TEU, they advanced 16.59% due to the good performance of imports, which grew 11.19%; and transit, which registered an increase of 21.53%. Especially significant is the behavior of exports of full containers during this month as they break the trend of previous months and reach positive figures with an increase of 8.42% and a total movement of 76,286 TEUs. On the other hand, empty containers experienced an increase of 20.77%.

Regarding total traffic, Valenciaport closed the year with a total of 76,620,440 tons channeled, 4.16% more than in 2017. This data are based on the good performance of general merchandise, both containerized and non-containerized , and of the solid bulks. Foreign trade of general merchandise registered an increase of 4.81% to a total of 24,577,795 tons. In particular, imports, with 9,879,778 tons, grew by 16.67% due to good records from countries such as China (+11.44%), Italy (+37.65%), Turkey (+35.83) %) and the United States (+1.15%). On the contrary, exports fell by 1.89% to a total of 14,698,017 tonnes. However, some countries such as Italy (+11.24%) and the United States (+17.32%) remain positive. The global transit, on the other hand, increases by 3.94%.

According to the final data provided by the Port Authority of Valencia, the non-containerized general merchandise closed the year with a growth of 19.49% and a total of 14,085,970 tons. This increase is due to good records of steel products that, with 2.56 million tons, increase by 12.05%; and other food products that, with 967,000 tons, amount to 35.83%. Car traffic, for its part, advanced by 3.18% to a total of 820,221 units. These data evoke Valenciaport as the leading site of the Spanish port system in this type of traffic. Ro-ro traffic, on the other hand, registered an increase of 25.14%, with 11,829,219 tons.

The general merchandise in container, with 57.885.808 tons, ascends 3.41%. This heading includes goods such as elaborated construction materials, with a movement of 5.33 million tons and a decrease of 4.55%; other merchandise, with a movement of 2.36 million tons, and an increase of 7.92%; chemical products, with a movement of 2.04 million tons and an advance of 6.77%; and machinery, tools and spare parts, with a movement of 1.36 million tons and an increase of 17.06%.

Solid bulks closed the year 2018 with a total traffic of 2,544,075 tons, representing an increase of 11.64%. This advance is mainly due to the good results obtained by cereals and their flours, which, with 1.38 million tons, grow by 27.80%. On the other hand, liquid bulks closed the year in negative, with a total of 1,909,692 tons and a decrease of 40.39%. By merchandise, the chemical products stand out, with a total of 347,000 tons and an increase of 1.02%; diesel, with a total of 301,000 tons and a decrease of 7.01%; and natural gas, with 217,000 tons and a fall of 84.4%.

The statistical bulletin of the Port Authority of Valencia states that in 2018, a total of 1,071,963 people have used the venues of Valenciaport for their maritime travels. This figure represents 0.88% with respect to the records obtained in 2017 and is mainly due to the good evolution of regular line traffic. Specifically, these services have been used in the ports of Valencia and Gandia for a total of 650,445 passengers. With regard to cruise ship traffic, in 2018, 421,518 people (+2.23%) have arrived at the port of Valencia on board one of the 194 stopovers they have carried out on the site.

The five countries with the highest merchandise volume through Valenciaport during 2018 were Spain, with 9.82 million tons and an advance of 13.32%; USA with 6.5 million tons and an increase of 26.36%; China with 6.4 million tons and a decrease of 8.65%; Italy with 6.2 million tons and an increase of 26.02% and Turkey with 4.2 million tons and an increase of 20.64%.

By geographical areas, the Mediterranean and Black Sea areas stand out with a total of 21.75 million tons and an increase of 15.72%; Spain with a traffic of 9.82 million tons and an increase of 13.32% and the Far East with 9.64 million tons and a decrease of 7.41%.
