Gijón, Spain (PortSEurope) February 12, 2018 – The new finished product storage building under construction by zinc producer Asturiana de Zinc S.A. in Gijón port begins to take shape. The foundation construction is now in its final stretch.
Once the work is completed, it will be the largest warehouse in the port, which in turn will become one of the largest zinc dispatch centres globally. Asturiana del Zinc receives by sea 1.2 million tonnes of raw material per year. This amount itself represents a quarter of total port traffic.
In addition, it also exports the bulk of its production by the same channel. The company exported 523,239 tonnes of zinc in 2017, breaking its own record for the seventh consecutive year. Asturiana de Zinc also exports sulphuric acid.
The warehouse is built in the dock of San Juan, which runs parallel to the beach. It will be larger, with a capacity of up to 250,000 tonnes, longer, three hundred meters in length, twenty more than the existing storage facility of the company.
It will also have conveyor belts designed to unload the ore from the ship and transport it to the factory without touching the ground. In addition to streamlining operations, the system is designed to minimise the spread of PM10 particles, the only pollutant that according to the Principality exceeded last year in the region the maximum values allowed.
Asturiana de Zinc is part of Glencore, the global commodities group.
